There is a growing interest towards Nordic pattern designs in Asia. To respond to the demand, we spent two weeks in Asia in the end of August and early September to meet old and new customers.

It was our very first time to have a booth at Intertextile Shanghai. There were some 20 booths at the Designers’ Area consisting of design studios showing their latest patterns. Patternsfrom Agency was the only one from Northern Europe and with 100% Nordic pattern designs.

As in most interior-related fairs, also Intertextile Shanghai had an area showing the upcoming trends for interiors. We were happy to find three familiar patterns in the trend area: Tiina Taivainen’s Sulo, Ammi Lahtinen’s Rhythm and Hanna Ruusulampi’s Pilkku. Those were all displayed in the trend area, Hanna’s Pilkku even in the trend catalogue of the fair.

The booth stayed busy during those four days of exhibition, and we managed to tie plenty of contacts to China. We look forward to see several patterns in production and share them with you soon! We were extremely happy to see also many familiar faces and current customers at our booth!

Next we flew to Tokyo. We visited a Nitori shop to find curtains with familiar patterns while collected information to our market study. Also, we spent a day at Gift Show, and discussed with potential customers. Our second aim for the visit was to evaluate if we should be present at the fair in the future. If so, the Artist’s Vision next to the Licensing Expo would be our place to be.

All in all, this trip proved that our business model basing on licensing out the copyrights for patterns is an accepted method also in China. And if it is in China, why not everywhere else? Also, to focus solely on Nordic patterns seems to be a right decision we have made when establishing the company.
